L.A. might have to wait - 19/04/2010

This weather and the flight problems it's causing might put Jamie Cox's L.A. journey on hold for the moment. He was due to fly out at the end of this week with his coach, Paddy Fitzpatrick to sparr in Las Vegas and L.A., but as everyone knows by now England is pretty much cut off from the rest of the world at the moment. His coach said, ''It's a shame we can't make the journey right now. Jamie was chomping at the bit for the chance to see how he matches up with all the talent out there'', ''it's all good though, he'll get his chance soon enough. I've been impressed with how calm he is about everything thats going on with him at the moment. It will serve him well for the future''. The Boxing Academy and Jamie Cox raise 141 for N.S.P.C.C. - 16/04/2010

Last saturday the 10th of April at the boxing academy, a raffle was held during our ''saturday fight night XII''  show to raise money for the N.S.P.C.C. whom Jamie Cox is a spokesman for. The crowd in attendance raised £141 by buying tickets to see who would win one of our custom leather team jackets, with the gym logo embrioded on the back.

One lucky customer walked away with his prize, which was presented to him by Jamie Cox who was there to show his support. Jamie also autographed the jacket as a little extra thank you. We at  the boxing academy would like to thank everyone involved for their ongoing support over the last 2 1/2 years and we look forward to keep providing you with training and entertainment in the future. keep smilin, peace

Trio in Wales/Full story - 16/04/2010

The boxing academy traveled to south Wales on thursday night, the 15th, with three of their amatuer team and came away with two wins by unanimus desicions, and a good performance in a skills bout against a bigger and more experienced opponent.

First up for the team was 16 year old Joe Beeden, having his second amatuer bout in three weeks. he faced undefeated Simeon Owen at 60kg. The local Owen was determined to put on a good performance infront of his home crowd, banging his gloves together and staring at Joe Beeden while their names were being anounced. When the bell went for the first round Owen came straight out looking to be aggresive, shooting jabs, but they were falling short of the target. 30 seconds into the round Owen jumped in with a big 4 punch combination and caught Joe with 2 of the shots as joe was pulling away. Then it was Beedens turn to get the jab going and he didnt stop using it throughout the rest of the fight. When Joe returned to his corner after the first round, head coach Darren Woodwards told him to keep with an agressive jab, in 2's and 3's, telling him that Owen didn't understand his distance and to take advantage of it by controling him with the jab. The second round had Owen attacking by jumping in but joe landing the cleaner shorter shots down the middle every time and getting back on the jab straight away.

Before Joe went out for the last round Darren told him that his opponent cant fight backing up, ''he's a bully joe, when you let him come forward he thinks he's having some of this, but when you go to him he doesn't know what to do''. With that Joe was firing on all cylinders in the last and recieved a well deserved and well recieved verdict by all three judges.

Millie Bailey had a chance to erase the memories of her last performance where she allowed herself to be dragged into a brawl and abandon her boxing skills. She faced bigger (by 3 1/2 kg) and older Stacey Dixon in a 3 round skills bout. Dixon started off behind a nice jab, moving well and scoring on the shorter Bailey as she came forward, but Millie stayed patient and by the half way stage of the first round was slipping past the bigger girls jab and getting her own off.

round 2 and 3 was much of the same with Dixon moving behind her jab, but Millie was cutting the ring off effectivley by now and scoring with straight lefts to the body from her southpaw stance. Bailey still needs to work on her straight back hand but showed lovely patience and improved distance while putting the pressure on, She shows a strength of charachter and determination that make it hard to see her fail to improve as she goes.

Luke Watkins made a successful debut in the amatuers with a unanimus desicion over 111kg Gareth O'Callaghan, another local favorite. This fight had the crowd whooping it up as both heavyweights exchanged big right hands throughout. Luke had the busier and more educated jab of the two and didn't stop using it all night. The difference in this fight was how luke used angles to get to the side when he was finished and got straight back on the jab. Watkins seems to be prone to a bloody knows though and a doctor was called to check on it in round three after it wouldn't stop bleeding from the first on. Luckily the doctor saw it for what it was and let the action continue, with Luke telling him ''this is a great fight, you don't want to stop this do you?''

Thanks again for the 10 or so people that made the 2 hour journey with us at late notice to show support. Thanks also to the hosting club who showed us great hospitality and made us feel welcome, we hope we can return the favour soon.
